BFC Rules & Guidelines



ENTRIES
1. Deadline is Sunday, December 20th, 2009.
2. Dancers may enter more than one category (i.e., dancers competing as Soloists may also participate in Troupe category).
3. All applications, forms, contracts, releases, monies, etc. must be signed by Competitor and received by Competition or its staff, before being accepted into any category in the Competition.
4. You can register online OR a hard copy of registration can be mailed.
5. Entries accepted on first-come/first-served basis until category is full.

MUSIC
1. Two CDS (one backup), containing only the music you will be performing to, need to be submitted, labeled with name and category. No complete commercial albums, please.
2. No live music will be provided. Competitors are not allowed to bring their own musicians.
3. Time limits for each category will be enforced.
• TIME LIMIT for Troupe is 7 minutes for choreography, 5 for improvisation.
• TIME LIMIT for Soloists is 5 minutes for choreography, 4 for improvisation.
4. Music must be "alternative" or non-traditional for the styles of dance you are performing.

COMPETING
1. All dancers must check in with Competition Staff at 3:00pm SHARP.
2. Competitors will draw numbers for their dance position.
3. If a Dancer/Troupe is not present at the time of the drawing, they will go first.
4. If a Dancer/Troupe is not ready to perform in their designated time slot, it will negatively impact scoring.
5. Competitors may start on or off the stage.
6. Competitors may use the stage, and may leave the stage if their routine dictates - however, Competitor may lose points if they are not viewable by the judges.

THE FINE PRINT
1. Competitors who appear intoxicated, abusive, or behave in a manner that may be harmful Staff or other dancers, will be immediately disqualified with no refund. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
2. All participants of the Competition authorize the use of photos and video for educational and promotional purposes.
3. If used for publicity purposes, winning Competitors agree to use the title of their category correctly.
4. Competitors assume all responsibility and liability for themselves and all personal property.
5. Categories without 3 or more entries may be canceled.
6. There will be no refunds after the deadline.

JUDGING
1. Competitors will be judged via scoresheets, and will be given their scoresheets after awards have been presented in their category.
2. Competitors will be critiqued "American Idol Style" by the judges during the competition. This means: immediately after a performer has finished their piece, they will be brought back onstage to receive live feedback from the judges.
3. Scoresheets are available for review before competing.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Competitors will be judged on:

1. Appearance - How well do costume, makeup and styling fit the movement & music selected by the competitor?

2. Stage presence - How well does the audience connect to the competitors presentation and personality?

3. Innovation - How well does the competitor choose and interpret music, fuse various dance vocabulary, and present new concepts in dance? Entries should be fresh, boundary pushing, and show individuality.

4. Technique - Does competitor have strong carriage of head and body, balance, ability to isolate separate parts of the body, and confidence and control over performance? Quality of movement and line will be factored into scoring. Does competitor display a clear understanding of their "Fusion" vocabulary?

5. Music Interpretation/Musicality - How well does competitor utilize and interpret the music they've selected? Are transitions smooth and flowing? Is competitor moving with the music, not fighting or chasing it?

6. Routine Requirements - Does routine contain at least one legible additional dance form to their style of Bellydance?


VIDEOS

No recording of dancers is allowed by private parties. People caught recording/videotaping will be asked to either surrender camera or to leave. This is the rule, and it will be enforced.
